West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins now sits at the top.
After it was announced Syracuse head men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim will not be returning next season, it left only one coach in the top-five of all-time wins remaining — Bob Huggins.
Huggins picked up career win 935 yesterday as the Mountaineers defeated Texas Tech. To Huggins though, he said it makes him feel as though he is getting older.
Honestly, I don’t think about those things,” Huggins said. “I don’t know, it means I’m old I guess. Getting older anyways. I’m not old, I’m getting older.”
Huggins and Boeheim know each other well. Huggins played against Boeheim as a player, and also coached against him.
“He’s a basketball die-hard and he was coaching when I was playing. We talk about that occasionally. I made two free throws actually to put him away,” Huggins said.
Huggins said Boeheim’s feat of winning over a thousand games is something that is hard to do. Boeheim was at Syracuse for 47 years.
“He’s a great guy. An absolutely great guy, [and] a fun guy to be around,” Huggins said. “I think a lot of times people misunderstand what a really good guy is and his humor. He’s had an absolutely incredible career from being a player at Syracuse, to what he’s done and what he’s won thousands and thousands of games and it’s hard to do. It’s hard to do and it’s hard to stay at the top like he has certainly.”
Huggins sits in third place all-time for wins, chasing Boeheim with 1,015 wins, and Mike Krzyzewski with 1,202 wins.
