West Virginia second baseman JJ Wetherholt was named Big 12 Player of the Week, and Blaine Traxel was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for their efforts this past week.
Playing four games against teams who made the NCAA Tournament in 2022, Wetherholt hit .529 on the week, with two home runs and eight stolen bases. One of those stolen bases was a steal of home, in the 11th inning Friday night to help WVU win against Arizona. Wetherholt is fifth in the Big 12 right now in batting average, fourth in hits, and first in the league in stolen bases with 12.
Traxel threw a complete game on Saturday against the Wildcasts, retiring the final 13 batters he faced. Traxel struck out six, allowed one run on five hits, and helped WVU complete the 5-1 win. Traxel is the first Big 12 pitcher to toss a complete game this year. Traxel leads the Big 12 in innings pitched with 14.0 through two. starts.
WVU went 3-1 this past week, beating No. 13 Maryland in the mid-week game and then taking two of three from Arizona. All four games were road games.
