Four new teams, 10 returning teams, and there is now peace amongst all 14.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Big 12 officially released their conference matchups for the 2023 football season. All 14 teams knew who they were playing in non-conference action, but they didn’t know who or when they were playing in Big 12 play — until today.
West Virginia has their bye week fall on Oct. 7. That week is the same week three other Big 12 teams have off as well: BYU, Cincinnati, and Houston.
The Mountaineers are also one of five Big 12 teams to not have back-to-back home Big 12 games. West Virginia has three games at home in succession — Sept. 9 vs Duquesne, Sept. 16 vs Pittsburgh, and Sept. 23 vs Texas Tech.
West Virginia plays in one of two currently scheduled Thursday night matchup of Big 12 play, as the Mountaineers travel to face Houston on Oct. 12, while Texas Tech and TCU play on a Thursday as well. Also, every team in the Big 12 plays twice at home in November and twice on the road in November.
West Virginia is one of two schools to start their season on the road. The Mountaineers travel to Penn State, while Texas Tech travels to Wyoming.
West Virginia is also the only school to miss both Kansas schools. The Mountaineers will have four home games against Big 12 schools, and five away games. This is due to the Mountaineers hosting two non-conference games. Baylor has the most home games out of all teams with eight.
West Virginia travels to the state of Texas three times. That is tied for the most times a Big 12 team plays road games in Texas. The combined trips from Morgantown to Fort Worth, Houston, Waco, and back is over 6,000 miles. Texas also plays three games away from home in the state, but obviously the travel is not as long for the Longhorns.
