On Wednesday night, West Virginia fell to No. 11 Iowa State by a score of 70-50 in Ames, Iowa.
West Virginia went down 6-0 early in the game, but an 8-0 run gave WVU their first lead of the game. The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Iowa State holding a slim one point lead after the first quarter.
The Mountaineers were able to keep the game close for the entire first half, going into halftime tied. JJ Quinerly led the Mountaineers in the first half with 12 points, including a pair of three pointers. The Mountaineers were also able to turn the Cyclones over 10 times in the first half, leading to 8 points off turnovers.
In the third quarter, the Mountaineers would take a two point lead on a Quinerly jumper, but WVU would score just two more points over the rest of the quarter, with Iowa State going on an 18-2 run to take control of the game. The Mountaineers shot 2-17 from the field in the quarter, and went 0-8 on three pointers.
The fourth quarter started with the teams scoring a combined four points over the first three minutes of the quarter, with West Virginia unable to make any dent in the deficit they fell in during the third quarter. Iowa State was able to get their lead to as large as 22, with 3:22 remaining in the game.
JJ Quinerly paced the Mountaineers with 16 points, and Kyah Watson was the only other player in double figures with 12 points.
West Virginia shot just 29% from the floor for the game and 22% from three. Iowa State was able to shoot 43% from the floor. Despite having double the turnovers, with 18 to WVU’s 9, Iowa State made up for it by shooting 23 free throws to West Virginia’s 5.
