WVU transfer portal target chooses North Carolina

Florida State transfer linebacker Amari Gainer has decided to use his final year of eligibility to play at North Carolina.

Gainer has 210 total tackles, 6.0 sacks, and five forced fumbles in his career with the Seminoles. Gainer is a graduate transfer and will have immediate eligibility.

Gainer took an official visit to WVU earlier in December and West Virginia head coach Neal Brown visited Brown earlier this month as well. Gainer was a high school teammate of West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene, as they are both from Lawton Chiles High School in Tallahassee, Florida.

Gainer decided to transfer from Florida State, but stayed with the Seminoles for their bowl game, which they beat Oklahoma 35-32 in the Cheez-It Bowl. UNC beat out West Virginia and a late push from Alabama.
