West Virginia forward Emmitt Matthews hinted at a return ahead of West Virginia beginning Big 12 play at the end of the month.
Matthews tweeted, “Christmas break is over. Back to work. Let’s get it.”
Matthews has not played since Dec. 10 against UAB after suffering a left knee injury against the Blazers. Matthews would finish the game after being injured in the opening minute of action. Matthews would finish with 16 points in 34 minutes, to go with nine rebounds.
Matthews missed West Virginia’s past two games against Buffalo and Stony Brook dealing with what head coach Bob Huggins said is a bone bruise.
“Getting better,” Huggins said of Matthews prior to West Virginia’s game against Stony Brook. “I think what they ultimately decided the problem was a deep bone bruise and it’s getting better. He’s feeling a lot better I think. I think the goal is for him to start practicing as soon as we get back to practicing and get ready for [Kansas State].”
Matthews practicing today would line up with Huggins’ projection of him returning to practice following West Virginia’s four-day break over the Christmas holiday. West Virginia will begin conference play Saturday, Jan. 31 on the road against Kansas State, followed by a trip to Oklahoma State two days later.
