West Virginia men’s basketball continues to climb and this week they were on the verge of cracking into the top 25 of the Associated Press Men’s Basketball Poll.
West Virginia only played once this week, and beat Buffalo 96-78 without starting fifth-year forward Emmitt Matthews. With the win the Mountaineers improved to 9-2 on the season and inched closer to being ranked for the first time since March of 2021.
West Virginia received 74 votes in this week’s poll, which would ranked them as No. 27 in the country. In front of them were Maryland with 78 votes and then the last ranked team was Arizona State with 98 votes in this week’s poll.
Four teams from the Big 12 were ranked this week, while four other Big 12 teams (including West Virginia) received votes in this week’s poll. West Virginia’s 74 votes is their highest total this season after receiving 20 votes last week, which was their previous season-high.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Dec. 22 against Stony Brook for their final non-conference game before they begin Big 12 play.
