West Virginia beat UAB 81-70 in what was their final test before they begin Big 12 play. The Mountianeers forced 19 UAB turnovers, while they were led by an effort of Kedrian Johnson and company, who helped give West Virginia their eighth win on the season.
Kedrian Johnson, A+
Johnson was going to be the difference maker for WVU and he surely was. Johnson was the catalyst in holding UAB’s Jordan Walker to 19. Yes, holding to 19 seems ominous, but Walker was averaging over 25 points per game, and ended up going 6 for 17 from the field. Walker also went 4 for 11 from three-point range which he led the country in three-pointers made heading into Saturday.
Johnson was also able to get it going on the offensive end, scoring 17 points in the win. Johnson shot 50% from the field, and made all seven of his free throws. Johnson was able to drive to the basket and hit from the mid-range as well.
Joe Toussaint, A
Toussaint was paired with Johnson for a majority of the game Saturday and was highly effective. Toussaint had three steals, and also was a big contributor on the offensive end. Toussiant scored 14 points and his stretch towards the end of the first half was incredible. Toussiant made a running layup and then on the ensuing inbounds play stole the ball, was fouled, and then made two free throws. Huge.
Erik Stevenson, C
Erik Stevenson made a good defensive play early on, but struggled to find his footing. Stevenson has been the rock for WVU so far this season, and the struggle is not a red flag. Shooters are going to have off night and even on his off night, Stevenson scored eight points. Stevenson had four fouls in the game, and played significantly less minutes than he usually does. Certainly no worry for him going forward.
Tre Mitchell, B–
Tre Mitchell seemed to be on the path to having a really poor night, but a strong second half push helped him. Mitchell had a very quiet 13 points on the night but hit a big three-pointer and also scored seven points in the second half despite having four turnovers. Mitchell seemed at times to be scared to go through contact and finish near the rim, something I think he can get more comfortable with going forward.
Jimmy Bell, B
Jimmy Bell was once again a force and he is really coming on as of late for the Mountaineers. Bell finished with eight points and eight rebounds, but he is making obvious strides on defense. Bell had four fouls on the evening but was very impactful on both ends of the floor, while playing over 21 minutes.
