In WVU’s 23-20 victory over Oklahoma, sophomore quarterback Garrett Greene came off the bench late in the first quarter and proved why he deserves to be on the field.
Greene produced 257 yards of offense with three total touchdowns to earn himself Big 12 offensive player of the week honors.
In the week prior against Iowa State, Greene checked in for one complete series, in which he led the Mountaineers down the field for six points.
Ahead of the Oklahoma game, Greene was still the backup, but stayed ready, knowing his number would be called against the Sooners.
“My thought process is, as always, stay ready so you don’t have to get ready,” Greene said. “I just kept staying ready, staying prepared, staying locked in.”
Greene showed he was ready to go, as he excited fans in the cold, wet environment with his ability to lead the offense from both the air and the ground, something West Virginia fans haven’t seen since the likes of Skyler Howard.
Greene also showed his grit and toughness throughout the contest when he extended plays and simply refused to go down at the point of contact.
At some stages of this roller coaster season, Greene had to line up at wide receiver in order to see the field. Greene played the slot receiver position and made a couple of catches when JT Daniels was the undisputed starting quarterback.
Greene showed his willingness to learn by switching to the wide receiver position, but the Tallahassee native knew being behind center is what he was meant to do.
“I’ve always known I’m a quarterback and I’m a passer,” Greene said. “I was just doing whatever it took to get on the field.”
Greene has shown that he’ll do whatever it takes to help his team win, but right now, his comfortability and dual-threat ability at the quarterback position might be exactly what Neal Brown’s squad needs.
Brown has said he will not name a starter at the quarterback position ahead of Saturday’s home game against Kansas State, so expect to see both Daniels and Greene throughout the contest.
The nation has seen how well Daniels can play when his game is on, but with the team sitting at 4-6 and in desperate need of two more wins, Greene’s dual-threat efforts may be the weapon that can get this talented WVU offense over the hump.
