West Virginia rolled to a 75-57 win over Morehead State on Tuesday. In the game, 13 of West Virginia’s 14 players appeared in the game, with sophomore James Okonkwo being the only Mountaineer not to see the floor.
Okonkwo had played in West Virginia’s first two games, averaging 12.3 minutes per game, along with 2.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said the decision to not play Okonkwo seemed to be as he was not being fully attentive on preparation for Morehead State.
“He’s fine,” Huggins said of Okonkwo. “Looking at particularly guys who have been here. He didn’t do anything bad. In most people’s eyes it’s not bad, in my mind we’re trying to get ready for a game.”
Huggins added, “I was kind of upset with the whole crew, but probably James more than the rest that they weren’t taking it real serious.”
After the game, Okonkwo would try to get back on Huggins’ good side, running the steps inside the WVU Coliseum – both the upper and lower levels. As Okonkwo was running he shouted out, “this is my way of apologizing.”
