Quarterback Garrett Greene has seen the field in each of the last three games for West Virginia. Greene played selectively against Baylor, played quarterback in the fourth quarter against Texas Tech, and then was used in a wide receiver role this past week against TCU.
Greene’s speed and versatility makes him one of the better athletes on West Virginia’s offense and head coach Neal Brown wants to see Greene continue to get on the field.
“We got to find a role for Garrett Greene to continue to grow,” Brown said. “He is versatile. He’s a good athlete. It doesn’t matter what you’re playing, he’s got a pretty good skillset.”
West Virginia will be without running back CJ Donaldson for the remainder of the season and could be without Tony Mathis as well this week against Iowa State.
“He deserves to play. he made two key catches the other day,” Brown said. “He’s one of our best skill players so we got to continue to find ways. I’m in favor of playing him more too. We’ll continue to figure out some ways with him.”
This season, Greene has rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on eight rushes, and has caught three passes for 20 yards. He has also thrown for 60 yards on four completions.
Despite his threat out of the backfield or at the wide receiver position, Brown says Greene is still a quarterback.
“He’s still a quarterback, he’s a quarterback and I want to be clear about that,” Brown said.
