The Dawn Plitzuweit era of WVU women’s basketball has begun with an 83-49 win over Fairmont State in the team’s ‘Haunted Hoops’ exhibition game.

The Mountaineers established pressure in defense throughout the exhibition game, forcing 30 Fairmont State turnovers, leading to 35 points.

The Mountaineers were led by three players returning from the 2021-2022 season, Jayla Hemingway, Madisen Smith, and JJ Quinerly each reached double-figures. Hemingway led the way with 14-points, while Smith netted 13, and Quinerly added 12 points.

West Virginia led from the jump, never letting the Falcons grab any lead or momentum.

The Mountaineers established their dominance early, as they led the Falcons 27-7 after the first quarter.

WVU kept that lead throughout the second quarter, as Fairmont State only chipped four points off the first quarter lead, giving the Mountaineers a 16-point advantage at halftime.

The Mountaineers didn’t take their foot off the gas pedal in the third quarter, as they built the lead up to 28 points going into the fourth quarter.

WVU kept scoring in the fourth quarter, as the Mountaineers built their lead to 36 points with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.

WVU went on to beat Fairmont State by 34 points in a dominate 83-49 win.

West Virginia will officially kick off the Dawn Plitzuweit era and the 2022-2023 season next Thursday, October 10th against the USC Upstate Spartans.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virgina.
