West Virginia to be short-handed as injuries pile up ahead of TCU

On Tuesday, West Virginia head coach Neal Brown gave multiple updates about injuries on his team. The Mountaineers suffered multiple injuries against Texas Tech on Saturday and there are many guys who will be out this week against TCU.

Running back Tony Mathis will be out this week after appearing to injure his elbow or arm this past week. Mathis’ backup CJ Donaldson returned from injury this past week and will be in line to start. Third-string running back Justin Johnson Jr. was also hurt against Texas Tech and if he is unable to play, Jaylen Anderson will play.

“Tony (Mathis) will be out,” Brown said. “CJ Donaldson will start. We’ll try to get Justin ready, if he’s ready, he’ll play. If not, Jaylen Anderson’s got to be ready to go and it’s his opportunity to prove that he’s ready.”

On the offensive line, West Virginia will be without James Gmiter for the second straight week, but did receive good news on Wyatt Milum who exited against Texas Tech.

“I think Wyatt, we’ll see how he goes. I feel pretty good about him playing in the game,” Brown said. “Gmiter will be out again.”

Gmiter got hurt at the end of the Baylor game and Brown said he still is unsure of the timeline on his injury.

“He got injured at the end of the Baylor game. He missed last week, he’ll be out this week and we’ll kind of see how he does moving forward,” Brown said.

On the defense, there are a few question marks, and a few guys who will be out on the back end.

Charles Woods should be available to play this week. Woods suffered an ankle injury in week one, and then saw his first game action since on Saturday.

Charles Woods, he’s going to practice today and he’ll be available,” Brown said. “We’re hoping he can play a few more plays.”

The Mountaineers will also be without Rashad Ajayi, but should expect Wesley McCormick to play this week.

“Rashad Ajayi will be out and then McCormick we’re hoping to get back this week,” Brown said of two of his cornerbacks.

On the more front end of the defense, defensive lineman Sean Martin should be back in a large capacity after not starting this past week, but still playing. Brown also said SPEAR Lance Dixon will not play this week.

“I’m getting close to 100%,” Martin said of his injury.

As for Dixon, Brown only said he will be out this week, but did not add much else.

“Lance, he’ll be out this week,” Brown said.
