Big 12

Meet The Opponent: Texas Tech

On Saturday, West Virginia will travel to face Texas Tech. The Mountaineers are coming off a 43-40 win over Baylor and both West Virginia and Texas Tech have gotten off to 1-2 starts in conference play.

Head Coach: Joey McGuire

McGuire came to Texas Tech from Baylor and was hired on Nov. 9, 2021. He was an assistant at Baylor and is the 17th head coach in Texas Tech history.

Record: 3-3, 1-2 Big 12

The Red Raiders have had a difficult schedule up until this point. They will be coming off a bye week when they play the Mountaineers, but five of their six opponents faced were ranked in the AP Top 25 at the time they played. Texas Tech has lost two straight games, 37-28 on the road against No. 25 Kansas State and 41-31 on the road against No. 7 Oklahoma State.

Offense: Texas Tech will deploy possibly three different quarterbacks, but with all of them they will want to throw the ball. The Red Raiders rank first in the Big 12 in passing yards per game (365.0) and they are averaging 34.3 points per game. Texas Tech’s rushing offense has not been as good as their passing offense, ranking second-to-last in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game (119.2). The Red Raiders have scored 26 touchdowns on the year which ranks seventh in the Big 12.

Defense: Just like their offense, Texas Tech’s defense will beat you with their passing defense. The Rd Raiders rank second in the Big 12 allowing 220.5 passing yards per game. However just like their offense, they struggle on the ground. Texas Tech has the second-worst rush defense in the Big 12, allowing 146.5 yards on the ground. The Red Raiders are tied with West Virginia for last in the Big 12 with two interceptions on the season.

Last Meeting: It was not a pretty sight for the Mountaineers last year when they hosted Texas Tech. The Mountaineers trailed 17-0 at halftime, before scoring 17 points in the third quarter to tie the game. Ultimately though, a late Texas Tech field goal would lift the Red Raiders to a 23-20 victory.

Game Information: Saturday’s game is set to kickoff at 3 p.m., and be televised on FS1.
