The first Associated Press Top 25 Poll was released on Monday, which featured five Big 12 teams and possible non-conference opponents for the Mountaineers.
Baylor and Kansas were tied for the fifth ranking in the country, with Kansas winning the National Championship last season. Texas followed the two ranked 12th, with TCU right behind them ranked 14th. The final Big 12 school ranked was Texas Tech which received the final spot at 25th.
In the non-conference portion of West Virginia’s schedule, the Mountaineers could face Gonzaga or Duke when they travel to Portland, Oregon, to play in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament.
Gonzaga is ranked second in the country, while Duke is ranked seventh. The Mountaineers will host Auburn in the Big 12/SEC Challenge in January, and the Tigers are ranked 15th in the preseason poll.
North Carolina who lost to Kansas in the National Championship ranked first, with Gonzaga and Houston right behind the Tar Heels.
10 of the 25 teams ranked are either in the Big 12 or SEC.
