On Saturday, the Mountaineers will be heading to Norfolk, Virginia, to take on Old Dominion for their fourth Sun Belt Conference game of the year.
The Monarchs played only two Sun Belt Conference games, Georgia Southern and James Madison. In those two games, they would find a 4-2 win against Georgia Southern and a tie against James Madison.
When talking about out-of-conference, the Monarchs have played seven games. In those seven games, they have scored seven goals and held their opponents to only four goals.
Tristan Jenkins is one of the key contributors to Old Dominion’s 4-3-2 start as he leads the Monarchs in goals (5), points (10), and shots on goals (12). He had a season-high in goals, with two against VCU and Southern Georgia.
The Mountaineers will be entering this game with an overall record of 2-6-2. WVU has played three conference games and has yet to win one. They are 0-1-2 with a loss to No. 4 Marshall and would tie with Coastal Carolina and South Carolina.
West Virginia’s only two wins of the year so far have come from non-conference play. They took down Robert Morris in a 1-0 win in the first regular season game. They would score a season-high four goals as a team in the second win and take down American 4-1.
Ryan Crooks has been a consistent bright spot, accounting for two goals which are tied for the team lead — Luke McCormick has the other two. He leads the team in assists (5), points (8), shots (21), and shots on goal (12).
WVU and Old Dominion have been playing each other since 1981. Since that time, WVU has had an overall record of 3-1-2. They have played much better on the road in those six matchups, with an overall record of 3-1 compared to their 0-0-1 record while at home.
The last time both these teams played was back in 2010, and West Virginia would come away with a 2-1 victory.
The match this Saturday will be held in Norfolk, Virginia, at the ODU Soccer Complex at 7:00 pm and can be viewed on ESPN+.
