In the early months of 2023, the World Baseball Classic will return for the first time since 2017. With that return will come the opportunity for one Mountaineer to compete on the global stage.
Sophomore infielder Alex Khan has been selected to play for the Pakistan Baseball Federation in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers in Panama.
Khan will join his brother Sami on team Pakistan, as their father Jamaal was born in Pakistan making them both eligible.
Pakistan will play against Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand, Nicaragua and Panama in a double-elimination style tournament, with the top-two finishers advancing to the World Baseball Classic in March.
In 2017, Pakistan did not qualify for the World Baseball Classic, and they did not compete in the three prior tournaments.
Khan played in 31 games last season for West Virginia, starting six times. He finished with three RBI and two runs scored.
