West Virginia opens their home and Big 12 schedule as they host Kansas on Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The Mountaineers last played on Sept. 1 against rival Pitt, losing 38-31, after Pitt scored a late pick-six. Kansas comes into this matchup having beaten Tennessee Tech 56-10 at home on Sept. 2.
Kansas is led offensively by their dual-threat quarterback Jalon Daniels. Daniels, a 6-foot, 215 pound junior went 15-for-18 on passing attempts, while throwing for 189 yards and one touchdown and one interception last week. Daniels also rushed for a touchdown, finishing with 29 yards rushing on three carries.
Last season, the Mountaineers and Jayhawks played in Lawrence, Kansas, with West Virginia winning 34-28 to become bowl eligible in the final game of the regular season. In that game, Daniels passed for 249 yards to go along with one touchdown and two interceptions. He would also finish that game rushing for nine yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.
As for West Virginia, they will also be relying on a quarterback named Daniels to help them get in the win column for the first time this season.
West Virginia quarterback JT Daniels had a solid performance in his first game with the Mountaineers. The Georgia transfer passed for 214 yards, while going 23-for-40 and throwing two touchdowns, while rushing for another. The Mountaineers would also run the ball effectively, rushing for 190 total yards. Freshman CJ Donaldson accounted for 125 of those yards, on just seven carries.
The Mountaineer defensive line was also impactful against Pitt. The group ended with five sacks and six tackles for loss against a talented Pitt defensive front.
Kansas’ defense was also able to cause problems last week, as they had five sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and one interception.
This will be the 11th meeting between these two schools since West Virginia joined the Big 12, as the Mountaineers lead the series 9-1. Kansas’ only win came in 2013, winning 31-19. The Mountaineers have won eight straight against the Jayhawks, including beating them 38-17 the last time these two schools played in Morgantown.
The game is set to start at 6:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.
