On Monday night, No. 6 West Virginia fell to the No. 7 Pitt Panthers 3-0 at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh.
After taking down No. 2 Georgetown earlier in the week, the Panthers added to their hot start to the season by having their way with the No. 6 Mountaineers.
Pitt used its early scoring to take down WVU, as the Panthers’ two goals in the first 17 minutes were too much to overcome.
Pitt got the scoring started in the 11th minute when Valentin Noel connected on his second goal in as many games off a perfect pass from Jacquesson Bertin.
Less than seven minutes later, at the 16:42 mark, Pitt would strike again. Lucas Rosa scored the second goal of the night for the Panthers after an initial shot in front of the net was blocked by a West Virginia defender. The efforts were not enough, as Rosa swooped in and easily buried the goal.
WVU’s defensive struggles continued in the first period, as the Panthers added a third goal when Jacquesson Bertin connected on a strike for his second goal of the season.
West Virginia went into halftime trailing 3-0 and could not make up ground in the second half of play.
By the time it was all said and done, WVU ended up registering five shots on net compared to Pitt’s seven, but nothing could get past Panther keeper Joe van der Sar.
The Mountaineers fell short by the score of 3-0, as Pitt’s hot start proved to be far too much to overcome in the back half of the match.
West Virginia moves to 1-1-0 on the season while Pitt improves to 2-0-0. The Mountaineers will be back in action on Friday, September 2nd, as they travel to University Park to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions.
