It is never too early to plan for the future, especially when it applies to college football programs over the past several years. The Mountaineers secured their first commitment to the 2024 recruiting class earlier this month. Coach Neal Brown and his staff look to add another prospect or two over the coming summer months.
Committed
Richard James Jr, DT
James Jr, a three-star defensive lineman out of Camden, New Jersey, took to Twitter two weeks ago to announce his decision.
Although James Jr is not the tallest prospect for a defensive lineman, standing at 6’1″, he can move offensive linemen at will and fill running lanes. The Camden product has an ideal build and skills for an interior defensive lineman, weighing 270 pounds. He can shed blocks quickly and easily locate the ball after maneuvering through traffic. Since James Jr is only entering his junior year this fall, he can improve his game and refine his technique before even setting foot on West Virginia’s campus.
James had offers from Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Penn State as well.
Prospects
Daivon Hill, ATH
Hill is a jack of all trades, receiving significant time on both sides of the ball at running back and middle linebacker. The Michigan product is a three-star athlete from River Rouge, Michigan.
Only ten days after the athlete received an offer from West Virginia back in January, Hill took an unofficial visit to Morgantown. The three-star prospect’s fast and physical play could be ideal for the Mountaineers, regardless of which side of the ball he plays.
Currently, West Virginia is competing against Purdue and Kentucky for the Michigan products services.
Dalin Wilkins, WR
Wilkins, another three-star prospect, is a big-bodied wideout from Clayton, OH. With his height and weight, 6’3″ and 200 lbs, the wide receiver can outmuscle corners and high point the football. In addition, his surprising speed and burst gave Northmont high school an edge on the football field.
Coach Brown extended Wilkins an offer back on January 25th but is competing with several other schools. The wide receiver also had offers from Kentucky, Bowling Green, Ball State, Toledo, Eastern Kentucky, and Central Michigan.
Jerrae Hawkins, WR
The only West Virginia native on this list is the highest-rated prospect. Hawkins is a four-star from Wheeling, WV. While the wide receiver might lack size, 5’9″ and 160 pounds, his blazing speed makes up for his lack of height. Hawkins averaged five catches, 96 yards, and a touchdown as a sophomore.
Along with West Virginia, who offered the wide receiver in January, Hawkins also has received offers from Pittsburgh, Old Dominion, and Toledo.
