Just like every other student-athlete, Tony Mathis had the opportunity to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Instead of entering though, he knew he needed to stay and continue his career at West Virginia.
“The bond you create with coaches, it doesn’t just change overnight,” Mathis said. “I decided to stay and work and do what I needed to do. I’ve just been that type of guy.”
WVU fans are looking to Mathis to fill Leddie Brown’s shoes in the upcoming season. Mathis says that he learned a lot from Brown, continuing to lead with the same attitude as last year.
“I learned how to be a college running back behind Leddie… he helped me a lot with pass protection,” said Mathis.
Mathis also stated that the group has been catching a lot more passes during the offseason as Graham Harrell has adjusted the offensive scheme, turning running backs into pass-catchers.
Head coach Neal Brown has spoken highly of Mathis as spring ball has been underway for the Mountaineers.
“He’s really being patient,” said Brown. “He’s strong enough to run through tackles, and he’s improved his lateral agility.”
