West Virginia Mountaineer Pat McAfee arguably has the most diverse resume in the years since he left Morgantown. A decorated NFL athlete, Pro Bowl appearances, retiring from the NFL several years ago and taking his talents to the next career. McAfee turned to the flip side of the NFL, working in journalism with a stint at Barstool Sports and a few commentating roles since then.
Now, the big times have finally called. Earlier this week, it was officially announced that McAfee’s next paragraph on his resume would be his employment by ESPN. McAfee will now be a regular on the network’s show Get Up as well as a color analyst for Thursday nigh broadcasts of primetime college football games. (Anyone instantly check West Virginia’s schedule and see that Thursday night game versus Baylor?)
McAfee has definitely made the most of his time since retiring from the NFL, and at one point earlier this year had hoped to land a job with Monday Night Football. After not getting that role, the Pro Bowl-er briefly thought of returning to playing the game he loves, but then ESPN came calling this summer.
McAfee has only been in the booth commentating a handful of times, but the kicker is nothing short of a star. Anyone who has followed McAfee’s career knows that his natural talent on the field is the same star factor as his talent in journalism. From social media, ways to give back to the community, comedy shows and podcasts; the athlete was made for this next step in his career path.
It’s obvious the kicker is overwhelmed with excitement, and will be so fun to watch as he works through this next phase of his career. McAfee is sure to bring something special to his commentating this fall.
