Coach Rich Rodriguez addressed the media today, providing insights into the team’s current state, with a particular focus on the quarterback position, internal depth and competition, and the challenges of spring training. Stressing the need for stronger competition and improved roster depth as the team prepares for the season ahead.
Rodriguez acknowledged the talent on the roster but quickly highlighted his perceived lack of depth, especially at quarterback, where only two starters remain from last season. “I don’t know if we are deep enough or if we have the competition enough yet,” said Rodriguez. The uncertainty at quarterback is a major focus for the coaching staff, and Rodriguez emphasized the need to push not just the quarterbacks but all of his players to compete while maintaining that level of honesty when it comes to their place on the depth chart. “You have to be honest with your players and tell them where they stand at all times,” Rodriguez added.
Rodriguez went on to discuss exactly what he is looking for in his potential starting quarterback, placing an emphasis on leadership and execution. “Run the offense and make good plays, and you can be the owner,” Rodriguez explained, noting that the quarterback’s role extends beyond being able to throw the ball, but command and lead the offense, be able to analyze defensive coverage, and make adjustments to work around the opponent. Rodriguez stressed that quarterbacks must act as extensions of the coaching staff.
To evaluate those quarterbacks, Rodriguez’s staff is using advanced video technology to determine their standing on the depth chart. “We’re cutting up film from each individual quarterback,” he said, explaining how they’re using this new video technology to isolate and analyze each player’s strengths and areas for improvement. He expressed some frustration with certain players, saying, “I like all of these guys, but some of them frustrate me because they like football and don’t love football.”
Rodriguez has been careful not to praise any individual too much, given the impact of the transfer portal and tampering claims he made earlier in the Spring.
Finally, Rodriguez ended his segment by giving advice to his quarterbacks, “You can’t just be a starter; you have to be an all-conference guy.” Rodriguez is setting high expectations for the team as they push forward as he has fostered many quarterbacks who have achieved that same accolade such as former West Virginia quarterback, Pat White.
