West Virginia women’s basketball star JJ Quinerly reached 2,000 career points during the Mountaineers’ First Round matchup against Columbia. West Virginia’s win advances them to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Quinerly’s 20th point during the game pushed her over the 2,000th career points mark making her the seventh Mountaineer in men’s and women’s basketball to reach the milestone. She later finished with 27 points putting her at 2,008 career points.
“I knew I needed 19 (points), but I really wasn’t thinking about it. I just shot it,” Quinerly said.
Kellogg shared that while everyone knew she needed just 19 points, the two didn’t discuss it before game time, but rather celebrated her accomplishments following the game.
The senior guard now sits in third place in all-time scoring among WVU women’s basketball and recently tied a program record scoring a career-best 38 points in the Mountaineers’ final home game of the season. For Quinerly, it’s natural.
“If we had a Mount Rushmore, JJ Quinerly should be on that list. I think she’s solidifying herself with the steals and the points and the loyalty and staying for four years in an era where that’s very unlikely, especially through three coaching changes,” head coach Mark Kellogg said.
The Mountaineers look to continue their March Madness journey as they will face No. 3-seeded North Carolina on Monday.
