As Rodney Gallagher enters his third season with WVU as one of the few returning offensive players and is expected to play a big role, Rich Rodriguez outlined what he can offer in 2025.
Gallagher is a former four-wide receiver and has yet to get his chance to play a central role in the team’s offense. Gallagher had hauled in 36 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns over his first two seasons.
Heading into 2025, he was expected to see a more improved opportunity to see the field, but Rich Rodriguez, in his Tuesday media session, made it clear that he will have to earn his opportunity and that there will be competition.
“I mean, he’s got competition, Jarod Bowie and Oran Singleton. I like Rodney; he’s a good player and a good athlete,” Rodriguez said.
In 2024, the Mountaineers saw Gallagher on both sides of the ball and while getting time at slot corner, in which he recorded five total tackles with one pass defended. He wouldn’t play much defense in the later half of the season, but early on, former head coach Neal Brown called Gallagher “May be the best man defender on the team he’s going to play.”
Rich Rodriguez left no doubt in his media session on Tuesday when asked if that would be a possibility in 2025.
“I don’t think so, if Rodney is playing both ways than we did a crappy job of filling our defensive back roster up, hes got to get ready, I would like for him and all of the receivers to learn all four receiver positions,” Rodriguez said.
Rodney Gallagher, entering his junior season at WVU, is facing his most important year yet, entering into a new system as one of the only guys returning on offense. He has shown flashes throughout his first two years and will get his chances to prove that he is one of the best receivers on the team throughout camp.
