WVU hosted TCU in a must-win scenario with their hopes of making the NCAA Tournament dwindling, they were able to handle TCU by a score of 73-55.
The Mountaineers got off to a red-hot start in the first half after going down five early on. The team shot an outstanding 58.6% from the field and 41.7% from three while TCU couldn’t find their footing offensively only shooting 40.7% from the field and making none of their seven first-half three-point shots allowing WVU to go into the break with a 42-27 lead.
West Virginia’s defense was the story of the first half, holding TCU to an over eight-minute scoring drought in the middle of the half. They also forced seven TCU turnovers.
Javon Small and Sencire Harris led the team offensively with 11 first-half points each.
The Mountaineers came out of the locker room after the half with a 15-point advantage. They allowed TCU to claw back into it, making it a nine-point deficit at one point in the half. WVU was able to sustain their first-half success shooting the ball, posting a 43% field goal percentage while shooting 43.9% from three.
Javon Small led the Mountaineers with 23 points and 10 assists, his first career game with double-digit points and assists. Sencire Harris had 13 points, and Joseph Yesufu had 14, both players played a huge role in WVU’s 73-55 win over TCU.
WVU now goes to 17-11 on the year and has kept themselves in a position to control their destiny to make an NCAA Tournament birth.
WVU will head to No. 25 BYU on Saturday, Mar. 1st at 10:00 pm EST for another huge Big 12 matchup in the latter half of the season.
