New Assistant Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Linebackers coach Zac Alley took the stage yesterday and made it clear what culture he’s bringing to Morgantown.
Alley emphasized his commitment to building a disciplined, high-performance culture that will win football games. He wants the most dedicated athletes to thrive under his leadership.
When asked about what he looks for in his players, Alley commented, “I think Michael Jordan said, talent wins games, talent plus intelligence wins championships. We always want to find the guys that can learn football,” Being a student of the game is something Alley brought up multiple times.
Being the Linebackers coach, Alley emphasized his expectations with his position group. “I challenge our backers more than anybody else. I tell them upfront when I recruit them that the standard for you will be higher for you than everyone else in the program because of who you are,” Alley said.
Alley made it clear that he is an honest coach saying, “I’m going to tell my guys the truth and when you do that they have an expectation level set and if they don’t meet that expectation level, there’s an issue.”
Closing his press conference, Alley reinforced his beliefs of consistency and discipline that he is bringing to the team. Just about everything Alley discussed molds perfectly into Rich Rodriguez’s coaching staff.
Being only 28, it is clear that Alley has high ambitions as a coach. His sharp mind and disciplined coaching style will shape this Mountaineer defense going into next year.
Alley and the Mountaineers are set to begin spring practices next week on Tuesday, Feb. 25, where we will get our first look at this reshaped West Virginia football team.
