The West Virginia women’s basketball team rose one spot in the AP Poll, even after a tough loss to Baylor last week. They are now ranked No. 17 in the country and are likely to rise after their huge win Monday against No. 12 Kansas State.
Although Kansas State was tied for first in the conference with TCU and Baylor, West Virginia dominated from start to finish. JJ Quinerly put up 26 points leading the Mountaineers to a victory with a score of 70-57.
Kansas State was one of the hottest teams in the Big 12, including scoring 97 points in their last outing, but West Virginia’s defense held them in check. The Mountaineers were able to take a commanding lead in the third quarter and never looked back.
WVU head coach Mark Kellogg was asked how he believes the committee will look at this game.
“I honestly have no idea. I think it is a quality win against a quality team. It is a quad one win, all of the stuff we have been talking about. We are just continuing to build our resume, and this helps that,” Kellogg said.
This is the Mountaineers’ biggest win of the season thus far, and one that can greatly increase their NET and AP Poll rankings. They are now 21-5 (11-4 in the Big 12), including 15-0 at home this season. They still have a chance at the Big 12 regular season title with three games remaining.
West Virginia will have their biggest game of the season this weekend on the road against No. 10 TCU. The Mountaineers’ five losses this season have all come on the road, but a win could jump WVU into the top 10 going into the last week of the season.
The game will take place on Saturday at noon on ESPN2.
