West Virginia women’s basketball upset No. 12 Kansas State in a much-needed win Monday afternoon. Head coach Mark Kellogg was pleased with his team’s performance and noted they are finally clicking together.
The Wildcats were without their star performer, 6-foot-6 center Ayoka Lee. Lee broke her foot in Kansas State’s matchup against Arizona State last month. Lee is expected to return to play Saturday.
“Obviously it feels good, a lot because of the respect we have for Kansas State. That’s a really really good basketball team, obviously without a phenomenal player and we understand that,” Kellogg said. “I thought we were excited to play. I thought we were ready to play.”
The Mountaineers took control of the court quickly in the game. They finished with 40 points in the paint, 27 points off of turnovers, and 18 bench points; something the team has been struggling with.
“I think we had a lot of people involved and that’s what we have been talking about so much this year,” Kellogg said. “Our bench outscored theirs which is another huge thing for us if we can get production like that off the bench.”
Kellogg shared the win was huge and much-needed for his team, but there is a lot of basketball to be played.
With this matchup win, the Mountaineers moved their home record to 15-0 adding their 16th straight, the most consecutive wins at home in program history.
West Virginia will play in another top 25 showdown on national television as they take on TCU this Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for noon ET.
