West Virginia baseball has clinched the series against Jacksonville in a close 3-2 win. It is the second win of Saturday’s doubleheader, starting the season 3-0.
Gavin Van Kempen got things going for the Mountaineers with three strikeouts in the first inning. He finished with four innings pitched and a 1.75 era.
Aidan Masters got the scoring started for Jacksonville in the second inning with a one-run home run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers needed an answer and got one from Skylar King in the fourth. King, who has a .615 batting average this weekend, hit a 3-run home run to right field to take a 3-1 lead. He has emerged as a potential star for this team this season.
The bullpen of the Mountaineers took care of business from there, including two important innings by senior Reese Bassinger. They allowed one run in the final six innings to secure the victory. The Mountaineers only had one hit in the defensive victory. The pitching of WVU has been a strong point of the weekend thus far.
The Mountaineers face Jacksonville one last time Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
