After losing to TCU last night, WVU head coach Darian DeVries kept it short with the media. He was not mad with how his team performed but was frustrated they could not get into the win column on the road.
The Mountaineers lost by a score of 65-60, dropping them to 5-6 in Big 12 play. After beginning conference play rolling, the Mountaineers have dropped six of their last nine.
The Horned Frogs picked up a much-needed win, performing well in front of their home crowd. “They did a nice job. They got into some ball-screen actions and were able to get downhill,” said DeVries.
The Mountaineers were led by Javon Small, who scored 20 points in the loss. Bench players Eduardo Andre and Joseph Yesufu added double-digit scoring, but the starters could not seem to get it going offensively.
“When we got back into it, I thought our defense started playing like it did at the start of the game; finally started getting some stops. I thought defensively we were really good,” said DeVries
West Virginia still ranks top 15 in the country in points allowed and opponent field goal percentage. The offense just can not find its groove. To consistently win games in the Big 12, both sides of the ball need to be clicking.
“This league is terrific like everybody knows. It is a very tough competitive league. Every night is a battle, and tonight was no different,” said DeVries.
The schedule is not looking easier for the Mountaineers, who will need to pull it together in their next game on Feb. 8 against Utah to remain in a good spot in the NCAA Tournament race.
