What started as a slow scoring game for the Big 12’s leading scorer, ended as a 27 point night to beat the number two team in the country, Iowa State.
Javon Small scored 20 of his 27 in the second half alone including a dagger three with under a minute left in the game to put the Mountaineers up eight points.
“It’s a shot that I’ve shot multiple times, I’ve made multiple times, and even though I was out there missing, I started one for six, I’m going to always have confidence in my next shot.”
Down the stretch, Small scored 12 of the team’s last 13 points to put the Cyclones away and did in multiple different ways. From the three point line, the and-one finishes, the a exclamation slam dunk, Small showcased at the end why he’s one of the conferences premier players.
“I honestly didn’t even know I scored the last twelve of the thirteen points. But since day one, I’ve just tried to do whatever I can for my team to win and if it takes me to score twelve of the last thirteen points then that’s what I got tot do.”
Helping his team win is exactly what Small did against one of the country’s top programs. The win marks the team’s third top ten win already and gives them a 4-1 record versus ranked teams.
It was the third time in program history that a number two ranked team in the country lost in the WVU Coliseum, WVU now sits at 3-2 all time in those games.
