Thursday, West Virginia and head coach Rich Rodriguez officially announced the hiring of Jake Casteel as a defensive assistant coach.
Casteel, son of WVU bandits coach Jeff Casteel, worked for Rodriguez at Jacksonville State as a defensive analyst and SAM’s coach. Previously to that, he was the linebackers coach and co-special teams coordinator at Cal Poly in 2022 as well as a defensive graduate assistant for Boise State in 2020 and West Virginia in 2021.
“We are excited to welcome Jake back home to Morgantown to continue on our coaching staff as the defensive assistant,” Rodriguez said in a press release statement. “His knowledge, passion for the game and strong defensive background will be key in helping us build a competitive and hard-nosed defense.”
Casteel played linebacker for Northern Arizona from 2014 to 2018. In his career, he racked up 250 total tackles (125 solo), 14 tackles for loss, seven passes defended, six and a half sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. Following his playing career, he became a defensive graduate assistant for his alma mater.
