WVU 2024 Season Wrap Up

2024 was a season full of ups and downs for the Mountaineers, with a few familiar faces coming and going.

The Mountaineers came into 2024 with high expectations, looking to build off the 9-4 season they put together just a year ago in 2023. Ahead of the week one matchup at home with Penn State, Pat Mcafee had his show live in Morgantown to get the fans buzzing.

The Mountaineers would lose that game and fall to 0-1 to start the season.

In week two they beat the University of Albany 49-14 led by a strong rushing attack that went for over 300 total rushing yards.

In week three they would travel to play rival Pitt and lost a nail-biter 38-34, to fall to 1-2.

WVU would win their next two games over Kansas and Oklahoma State, then drop the two games after that to Iowa State and Kansas State to make their record 3-4 on the season.

They would then beat Arizona and Cincinnati to improve their record back over .500 at 5-4. They would drop two of their last three regular-season games to Baylor and Texas Tech in the season finale to make their 2024 record 6-6 with the lone win in that stretch over UCF.

Following the Texas Tech loss in the regular season finale, WVU decided it was best to move on from head coach Neal Brown after six seasons with the team. Brown had a 37-35 record over his tenure at West Virginia.

The Mountaineers season was capped off by a classic Frisco Bowl matchup with a ranked Memphis team in which they would lose 42-37 coming down to the final play of the game, falling to 6-7 on the 2024 season. Before that game the team announced that they would re-hire head coach Rich Rodriguez for another run in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers finished the season ninth in the Big 12 with a 5-4 record in conference play. The WVU offense ranked ninth in the Big 12 with 405.4 total yards per game. While the offense was subpar in the Big 12, the defense ranked in the bottom three in the Big 12 in yards allowed per game with 415.3.

The Mountaineers are in the beginning phases of their off-season, trying to hash out the rest of the coaching staff and begin replacing the holes left in the roster from players entering the transfer portal. The first window of the transfer portal has been closed since Dec. 28th, 2024, and will re-open from Apr. 16th to Apr. 25th.
