The West Virginia women’s basketball team shut down UCF in their Big 12 home opener Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers put on a stellar performance during the first half, but their energy fell following halftime.
Kellogg shared that the practices over the holiday were some of the best the team had and he wasn’t shocked by the performance they put on during the first 20 minutes.
During the first half, the Mountaineers led UCF 50-16. They made six-threes and shot 55% while the Knights experienced 16 turnovers and shot 0-of-6 from the 3-point range.
“I thought we were really prepared; we were dialed in. I thought we had a different look about us. The first half we played as well as we had the entire season,” Kellogg said.
The second half looked different. While the Mountaineers maintained a steady lead, they had 16 turnovers and went 11-of-33 in shooting while The Knights shot 55%.
“We didn’t play very well; we relaxed on defense. I thought we lost our edge completely on that end,” said Kellogg of the second half.
Kellogg said the team will continue to work on keeping the energy up, and if they want to be ‘elite’ they need to put the full 40 minutes together.
