The Mountaineers fell 42-37 to No. 25 Memphis in the Scooters Coffee Frisco Bowl.
WVU trailed 17-0 early in the first half. The Mountaineers only had one first down in the first quarter and had 28 total yards of offense to Memphis’ four first downs and 95 total yards and two touchdowns.
West Virginia held the ball for a total of 33:40, while Memphis’ controlled the clock for 26:20.
WVU quarterback Garrett Greene had 328 passing yards for two touchdowns and an interception, which was good for a 152.9 passer rating. He also picked up another 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground rushing. That was a season-high in passing yards for Greene.
Wide receiver Hudson Clement had a career day, setting career highs in both receptions (11) and receiving yards (166) against an FBS opponent. He also caught two touchdown passes, and his longest reception was 37 yards.
The Mountaineers were able to establish a strong running attack after the first quarter, tallying a total of 206 total yards on the ground with three touchdowns, CJ Donaldson had two touchdowns and 83 yards on 22 carries, Jaheim White had 28 yards on seven carries before leaving the game with a knee injury.
WVU would rack up 534 total yards of offense, while Memphis recorded 474. Both teams were perfect in red zone efficiency. Memphis was 5-5 and WVU was 3-3.
Sophomore Ben Cutter led the Mountaineers with eight total tackles.
WVU’s season is over now, and it’s time for them to head into the offseason and what direction they will go with new head coach Rich Rodriguez.
