The West Virginia women’s basketball team overpowered Temple on the road this past Sunday. Besides the holiday tournament during Thanksgiving, this was West Virginia’s first regular season away game.
Even with the win, head coach Mark Kellogg shared that the offense lacked rhythm, but the defense remained on point. A win on the road is important and definitely different from playing on home territory.
“You’re playing in somebody else’s environment, obviously the crowd’s against you, the travel is different, the preparation is different from shooting times to where you eat your pregame meal,” said Kellogg about travel. “Obviously the bed you’re sleeping in isn’t your own.”
The Mountaineers had 20 assists on 25 field goals made against Temple. While their ball movement is getting better, Kellogg shares it isn’t quite where he would want it compared to stats from last year.
“We have been talking about it, advancing it, even in transition a little bit more via the pass,” said Kellogg.
West Virginia will take on Colorado to kickstart conference play in another away game Saturday evening. The Buffaloes have a relatively new roster but have seen back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances and hold a record of 9-2. While the Mountaineers are in the midst of finals week, Kellogg shares they will continue back on the court to prepare.
“Trying to figure out what the lineups look like and rotations hasn’t been easy, but ten newcomers, some of which we are familiar with, some of which we are not that familiar with, the deep dive is on,” said Kellogg.
West Virginia continues to take their training day by day and focus on upcoming Big 12 play. The Mountaineers remain third in the Big 12, No. 14 overall and have a record of 10-1.
