As of Sunday, West Virginia football is without a head coach after the firing of Neal Brown and it may be a while before players and fans know who will be the new leader of the program.
WVU athletic director and vice president Wren Baker spoke of the search for a new head coach on Sunday and said there will be no specific timeline as he tries to find his guy.
“I won’t establish a timeline because then people start getting really, they freak out when you’re not on that timeline,” Baker explained.
Baker also mentioned that some potential candidates still have games this season to worry about, which affects the timeline. He said he wants to make sure that the candidates fulfill their obligations with their current programs.
“There’s a lot of things that affect the timeline,” Baker said. “We have potential candidates who’ll be coaching in championship games that kind of stuff. And so, their availability, they have an obligation to the team that they’re with to make sure that they’re doing their job there.”
Baker compared it to his head coaching search with men’s basketball. Some candidates, like the one he ended up hiring, Darian DeVries, were playing in the NCAA tournament after it was announced that he would not be bringing back Josh Eilert. In terms of West Virginia’s bowl game, it was announced on Monday that Chad Scott would be the interim head coach.
Baker also said that he “refuses to feel rushed” despite acknowledging that the faster he hires somebody, the better the program will be in the near future, with the transfer portal window opening soon.
“I understand the quicker we can go the better position we’ll be in, but I just refuse to feel rushed,” Baker said.
While this could be a lengthy yet quick-developing process, Blue Gold Sports will keep you updated with all the latest surrounding this impending search for a new head coach.
