West Virginia Blown Out by Texas Tech in Regular-Season Finale

It was a rough showing for West Virginia in their final regular season game, falling to Texas Tech 52-15.

Garrett Greene completed 29 of his 39 passing attempts for 265 yards and two touchdowns, he threw two interceptions as well. Jahiem White was one of the few bright spots for the Mountaineers, rushing for 124 yards and a touchdown on just 14 attempts.

West Virginia’s first drive was promising. After winning the toss and electing to receive, they took the ball into Texas Tech territory. However, they turned it over on downs after attempting a fourth and five.

The Red Raiders started off hot on offense. After just a few plays, they were already in the red zone. After an incomplete touchdown catch call stood after a challenge on third and 10, Texas Tech made a field goal to get the first score of the game.

The Mountaineers’ second drive was highlighted by a 25-yard Jahiem White touchdown, but they once again stalled in Texas Tech territory. This time, though, they attempted a 52-yard field goal, which was good and tied the game at three with under four minutes left in the first quarter.

On their next drive, Texas Tech once again drove the ball into the red zone. They had the ball on the one-yard line, but the Mountaineers made a goal-line stand, pushing them back to the four-yard line. They attempted their second field goal and made it, going up by three.

After the Mountaineers punted it away and the Red Raiders had a good return, they capitalized. Tahj Brooks rushed in the first touchdown of the game to put Texas Tech up 13-3 with 10:32 left in the first half.

WVU punted it away again and Texas Tech scored again. It was a one-yard touchdown pass to put Texas Tech up 20-3 after a successful PAT.

Greene threw an interception with under three minutes to go in the first half. The Red Raiders scored points off the turnover with Brooks’ second rushing touchdown of the day, putting his team up 28-3 after a successful two-point conversion.

Things wouldn’t get better for WVU in the first half while they were looking to give any answer they could. Greene fumbled and Brooks scored once again.

At halftime, the Mountaineers trailed 35-3. They allowed Texas Tech 339 total yards, averaging 8.3 points per play.

Texas Tech picked up in the second half right where they left off in the first. They scored yet another touchdown as they continued to pile on.

Anthony Wilson picked off Texas Tech on their next drive. The Mountaineers capitalized after a lengthy drive, scoring their first touchdown of the game. It was a Rodney Gallagher touchdown reception. The two-point attempt was no good and WVU trailed 42-9 at that point.

After Texas Tech made a short field goal attempt, West Virginia would score again. White took it into the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown.

Texas Tech scored yet again with their backup quarterback, Will Hammond taking it himself. It was the final score of the game as Texas Tech won 52-15.

West Virginia finishes the regular season 6-6 (5-4 in conference play). They’ll now await to see which Bowl they are selected to and who they will play.
