West Virginia senior quarterback Garrett Greene played in his last home game as a Mountaineer on Saturday. Post-game, Greene expressed his gratitude and reflected on the past few years.
“I hope that they just saw a guy that gave everything for the state, for his teammates, for his coaches, his family,” Greene said when asked what he hopes fans took away from his play. “It’s been an honor of a lifetime to be able to represent the state, be able to represent this wonderful university. So, I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
Greene arrived at WVU in 2020 during the COVID season and saw his first game action that same year. He continued to play more and more until he became the full-time starter towards the end of the 2022 season.
“It means everything to me. They took a kid from Tallahassee, Florida and really welcomed him with open arms, ” Greene said. “It was the best decision I could of ever made.”
With the Mountaineers defeating UCF on Saturday, Greene got to sing and hear ‘Country Roads’ one last time after a home victory. He spoke about what that meant to him.
“I tried to soak it in a little more than I usually do,” Greene said. “That’s the most special tradition in all of college sports and I was grateful and thankful to be able to experience it.”
Greene’s collegiate career is not totally over, however. Next week, WVU travels to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech. After picking up their sixth win of the season over the Knights, WVU will also play in a bowl game.
