Three Takeaways from WVU’s Win Over UMass

The Mountaineers defeated UMass 75-69 on Friday despite clear second-half struggles.

West Virginia took an early lead, never giving it up and was up by 17 points at halftime but nearly allowed a Minutemen comeback. There is a lot that can learned about this new-look WVU squad as they start this new era 2-0.

When it Rains, it Pours

When West Virginia was off, they were really off. Mostly referring to the second half, they had stretches without field goals that allowed UMass to get right back into it. Their defense kept them afloat for the most part, but they also had their struggles. UMass out-scored the Mountaineers 41-30 in the second half. Just three of UMass’ 15 turnovers came in the second half. West Virginia shot just 25% from the field in the second half, 6-for-24. The Mountaineers may have trouble winning games if such second-half struggles continue.

True Freshmen Continue Seeing Minutes

After an impressive start to their collegiate careers on Monday, freshmen Jonathan Powell and KJ Tenner saw more minutes again on Friday. Powell was one of four Mountaineers that reached double-figure points. In 22 minutes, he had 10 points, shooting four-for-10 from the field, two-for-six from three to go along with one rebound. Tenner played 13 minutes, had four points, two rebounds and an assist. If the two continue to produce for WVU, it is not only a positive sign for the rest of this season, but for the future of the program.

Rebounding

After being outrebounded in their season opener, West Virginia’s rebounding ability was questioned. Although they may lack height, their physicality and technique could compensate. They slightly outrebounded UMass 36-34 and both teams had 12 offensive rebounds. Tucker DeVries led the way with eight rebounds. Amani Hansberry had six, while Eduardo Andre, the Mountaineers’ only true center, also had six in just 13 minutes.
