When called upon Saturday due to Garrett Greene’s injury, backup quarterback Nicco Marchiol’s was able to run the offense and help the Mountaineers to two scores.
Hightly-touted West Virginia offensive lineman Wyatt Milum credited Marchiol’s play and explained what difference he sees in him.
“Nico’s a great player. Yeah you can’t really (sense a difference) when he comes in. It’s the same mentality same, so there’s no difference there,” Milum said of Marchiol.
Leading up to the season, Marchiol was one of the most talked about players due to his improvements. Coaches felt more confident in him running the offense if he had to and said they wouldn’t miss a beat.
Marchiol subbed in a couple of times for Greene last season, but may have been lacking confidence and leadership. Milum explained the difference in confidence he’s seen from the redshirt sophomore.
“His confidence has grew a lot since last year, that’s one big thing I can notice. Just his leadership, his confidence has grown a lot,” Milum said.
Marchiol finished the day 1-1 passing the ball for 10 yards and a touchdown. On the ground he added 46 yards on seven carries.
An encouraging performance may give Mountaineer fans a glimpse into what the future holds for WVU’s most likely next quarterback post-Greene.
