Chad Scott breaks down what has slowed down Garrett Greene’s production this season

WVU Offensive Coordinator Chad Scott spoke to the media Monday afternoon following the Mountaineers’ 38-34 loss in the Backyard Brawl.

It was the best the offense has looked all season against an FBS team and Chad Scott had lots to say about the WR depth as well as the improved offensive line play as well. One of the topics brought up to Scott was QB Garrett Greene’s drop in production from a season ago.

Greene completed 16 of his 30 pass attempts for 210 yards against Pitt. He also threw for two touchdowns and two interceptions, one of which came on a 4th and 10 throw in the final seconds in attempt to keep the game alive. But for Greene, it’s the rushing attack that seems to have a drop off for the dual-treat QB.

A season ago, Greene rushed for 13 touchdowns and 772 yards. Through the first three games in his 2024 campaign, the Tallahassee native has 122 yards and one touchdown. Greene is also rushing for two less yards per carry than a season ago.

So while Greene has not been bad by any means for WVU, his production is clearly not as high as fans saw a season ago and has not hit the level fans believed the QB would hit coming into the season. Scott had a bit to say when it came to why he thinks Greene is not living up to his potential.

“He just got to go let it loose. I told him today, don’t flinch, don’t think, and go play ball.” Scott added, “He’s so competitive with himself and he wants to be so perfect, so right all the time. Sometimes he’s his own worst enemy and overthink sometimes instead of trusting himself and letting it go… the other ten guys on the field are better when he’s on it.”
