Announcements keep on coming at Big 12 Media Days, which kicked off day two with the reveal of the first ever Big 12 Alumni Council.
The council, announced Wednesday morning in Las Vegas, comprises of two former players from each of the 16 members of the Big 12 Conference, for a total of 32 council members.
According to the Big 12, the Alumni Council will serve to “provide guidance and insights surrounding a variety of topics, including brand building, athlete relations, storytelling, digital content and much more.” In turn, the members receive VIP access to all conference events and Big 12 Championship competitions, along with professional networking access to the Big 12’s Business Advisory Board.
Georgeann Wells and Mike Gansy will be the first to represent WVU as members of the Big 12 Alumni Council. Wells played college basketball at West Virginia from 1982 to 1986, where the 6’7″ center became the first woman to register a dunk in an official NCAA game and set the all-time WVU blocks record with 436 total.
Gansey currently serves as the general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA. He played three seasons at WVU from 2003 to 2006, where he recorded career averages of 14.3 points and 1.7 steals on 52.6% shooting from the field and 39.4% from three. Gansey was named a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Award, the Wooden Award, and the Naismith Trophy as a senior.
Wells and Gansey’s duties for the Big 12 Alumni Council officially begin this August alongside the official expansion of the Big 12 that will add Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah to the conference.
