As per reports and Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider, former West Virginia pitcher Alek Manoah will miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season as he’ll be undergoing UCL surgery next week.
After a season in 2022 where he was named an All-Star and finished third in AL Cy Young voting, Manoah struggled in 2023, resulting in him being sent down to try to refind his ‘stuff’. The 6-foot-6 former first-round pick began his 2024 completing a rehab assignment and didn’t take the mound for the Jays until May 5.
This season, Manoah has made five starts, pitching a total of 24.1 innings with a 3.70 earned run average and 26 strikeouts. His best start came against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 19, where he tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out seven.
Last Wednesday, May 29, he was taken out of the game against the Chicago White Sox after one-and-two-thirds innings due to elbow discomfort, which landed him on the 15-day IL. Now, after going through further testing it was found that Manoah will require UCL surgery, whether it will be a full Tommy John surgery or just a brace procedure is unknown however.
