With the regular season beginning to wind down, the Mountaineers sit at 27-16, including a 14-7 record in conference play, giving them second place in the Big 12, tied with Oklahoma State.
Before the final stretch, let’s take a look at West Virginia’s statistic leaders up to this point.
Batting Average
Technically, JJ Wetherholt leads the team with a .333 average but does not meet the requirement of two plate appearances per game and 75% of games played since he was hurt earlier in the season. So instead, it goes to senior third baseman Reed Chumley, who’s hitting .319. Chumley also leads the team in doubles with 10, triples with two and on-base percentage among players meeting the requirement, while also being in the top three in many categories such as hits (43), home runs (10) , RBIs (32) and walks (22).
Hits
Sam White, who has played in all WVU’s 43 games is the team’s leader in hits with 48. He’s had by far the most plate appearances with 186 and is tied for the team lead in walks with 23 along with Ben Lumsden.
RBIs and Home Runs
Hedgesville, West Virginia native Kyle West has batted in the most runs this season for the Mountaineers with 36, he shares the team lead for home runs with 11, tied with Grant Hussey. Hussey, like West, is a West Virginia native, from Parkersburg and in Tuesday’s 11-1 win over Pitt became WVU’s all-time home run leader with his 35th career home run.
Stolen Bases
Brodie Kresser leads the team in stolen bases with 10, despite only playing 29 games; he has yet to be caught stealing. Tied for second on the team with nine stolen bases is freshman Armani Guzman, who is usually brought in as a pinch-runner and Skylar King, with nine, Guzman has not been caught stealing, while King has been thrown out three times thus far.
ERA
Derek Clark has the lowest earned run average. on the team with a 2.72 ERA. To meet the requirement for pitching averages, a pitcher must have pitched at least one inning per game. Clark also leads the team in complete games with three and shutouts with one, the only Mountaineer pitcher to have thrown either this season.
Appearances
Maxx Yehl has made the most appearances on the mound this season for West Virginia with 18. He’s pitched 22 innings, holding a 3.27 ERA, with 26 strikeouts and two saves.
Saves
Hambleton Oliver has the most saves among WVU pitchers, with four. Oliver has made 15 appearances this season, with a 3.26 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched.
Aidan Major
Aidan Major leads pitchers in almost everything else. He’s started the most games with 11, pitched the most innings with 60 and has struck out the most batters with 73. Major started off the season on fire, but recently has hit a rough patch as West Virginia’s number one in the rotation.
The Mountaineers are on the road this upcoming weekend to face conference opponent Cincinnati in a three-game series.
