West Virginia men’s basketball made the addition of Chester Frazier to their coaching staff, they announced.
Frazier has been at Illinois since May of 2021, as he played point guard for the Fighting Illini.
Frazier was an associate head coach at Virginia Tech under Mike Young prior to joining the Illinois staff. Frazier was also an assistant at Kansas State under Bruce Weber for seven seasons.
Frazier is originally from Baltimore and was known for his play on defense during his playing days.
Illinois made the Elite 8 this past season, losing to UConn. They have had at least 20 wins in each of the last three seasons that Frazier has been on staff, including reaching No. 6 in the final AP Poll this season. They also made the NCAA Tournament in all three seasons Frazier was on staff under Brad Underwood.
Jeremy Werner of 247Sports reported that Illinois head coach Brad Underwood told him of the move from Frazier.
“We thank Chester for his undying loyalty, his dedication. Nobody bled orange and blue more than him. He’s a guy that has lived it. But I’m excited for him. He came here wanting to win championships because he didn’t as a player, and he came away with two,” Underwood told Werner. “I’m excited his path as associate head coach is the next step. Excited it puts him back in a vicinity where his name recognition will really I think pay off for him in his desire to be a head coach. He was fantastic and wish him nothing but the best.”
Frazier carries ties to the Washington D.C. and DMV area, an area with strong recruiting potential.
