Another Big 12 school has a head men’s basketball coach opening as BYU head coach Mark Pope is expected to be hired at Kentucky.
Mark Pope, who has been at BYU since 2019, is going to be hired at his alma mater, according to multiple sources. Pope, who was in his first year with the Cougars in the Big 12, led them to a 10-8 record in league play, tying them with Kansas for fifth in the league.
BYU had a first round exit in the NCAA Tournament at the hands of Duquesne.
Pope was 110-52 at BYU across five seasons and BYU was ranked as high as No. 12 this season in the AP Poll.
BYU joins Oklahoma State and West Virginia to have a head coach opening this offseason. WVU hired Darian DeVries from Drake, while Oklahoma State hired Steve Lutz from Western Kentucky.
Baylor head coach Scott Drew was in the running to be the head coach at Kentucky, but he made the announcement that he was staying put at Baylor.
