As West Virginia gears up towards finding their next head men’s basketball coach, this is a process they want to complete quickly.
West Virginia Director of Athletics Wren Baker spoke on Wednesday following the decision to begin their head coaching search after Josh Eilert served in an interim capacity over the past year.
Baker first said he met with the team early this morning after they got back from Kansas City and the Big 12 Tournament. There he told them of his plans to move in a new direction for the head coaching position.
“My hope would be we can go quickly. We’ve certainly had enough time to study profiles and all of that,” Baker said. “We’ve had time, so I think we’re prepared to move pretty quickly, but some of that is incumbent upon the schedule of the candidates.”
Baker then said he wants to find a new coach by the conclusion of the Final Four.
“I hope we could get a search completed by the Final Four or if not really close to there. I would hope we could get it done sooner, but usually, you want to have something done by the Final Four.”
Selection Sunday is this upcoming Sunday for the NCAA Tournament, and the National Championship game is set for April 8. This would give Baker and WVU a little less than a month to complete their search.
