The No. 24 West Virginia women’s basketball team defeated TCU 57-49 on Senior Day Saturday to end a three-game losing skid.
The Mountaineers forced 27 turnovers in the game, including 16 steals allowing them to score 23 points off of turnovers.
JJ Quinerly exited the game early in the third quarter after colliding with teammate Kylee Blacksten and did not return for the rest of the game. She ended with 14 points, two steals and a rebound.
Jordan Harrison also had 14 points for WVU, with six steals, five assists and four rebounds.
Sedona Prince led TCU and all scorers with 15 points, shooting seven of 13 from the field. She had 12 rebounds, four blocks and a steal in the loss.
West Virginia applied pressure early and jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, with TCU committing four turnovers in the first couple of minutes. The Horned Frogs then took a 7-6 lead going on a 7-0 run with 5:33 left in the first quarter.
The Mountaineers would reclaim their lead after forcing two more turnovers to make the game 11-7 under five minutes left in the first quarter. Nine of their first 11 points came off of turnovers to start the game.
WVU would stay on a 15-0 run to end the first quarter, with the Horned Frogs committing nine turnovers in the quarter and five in the last five and a half minutes. They lead 21-7 going into the second quarter, with 12 points coming off of turnovers.
It was much of the same in the second as TCU turned over the ball twice on their first two possessions to begin the quarter. West Virginia would score five more points before the Horned Frogs’ next field goal to end the 20-0 run and make the score 26-9.
TCU would make a field goal as well as an and-one to make the game 26-12 with WVU in a slight scoring drought. However, they would soon go on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 33-12.
West Virginia ended the half making four of their last five field goal attempts. They held a 37-17 lead going into halftime. The Mountaineers forced 15 turnovers in the first half, including 10 steals.
TCU struggled from the field in the first shooting five of 20 and just one of eight from three. Their only advantage in the first two quarters was rebounding, with them out-rebounding WVU 17-11.
To begin the third quarter, West Virginia maintained their lead but struggled shooting to begin the half shooting two of seven and missing two three-point attempts halfway through the third quarter. Quinerly limped off the court early in the quarter after colliding with teammate Kylee Blacksten.
It was back and forth to end the third as TCU made their last three field goals of the quarter. Quinerly didn’t return for the rest of the quarter and had an icepack on her leg while sitting on the bench, WVU led 48-30.
In the fourth, WVU committed four turnovers early and didn’t score until 4:18 while TCU cut into the lead to make the game 50-38. The Mountaineers would get back into their rhythm without Quinerly, forcing three turnovers under-five.
A three-pointer by Madison Conner would end a TCU scoring drought under three minutes, with WVU leading 53-41. The Mountaineers would go into a scoring drought of 2:35 before Jayla Hemingway hit a free throw to keep West Virginia up 54-43.
The Horned Frogs would have to foul late with under a minute to go as they were down late. West Virginia did not make a field goal in the last 3:32 but held onto their lead and would defeat TCU 57-49.
The Mountaineers struggled in the second half shooting 31.8% from the field and just one of nine from three. They committed 10 turnovers in the second half compared to just two in the first but were still able to get the victory after leading by 20 at the half.
